Foothills Golf Group has announced a partnership with OB Sports Golf Management to take over maintenance for The Foothills Golf Club and Ahwatukee Country Club.
“After careful consideration, we chose OB Sports to manage the golf course maintenance operations for The Foothills Golf Club and Ahwatukee Country Club,” said Terry Duggan, president of Foothills Golf Group in a statement. “We were impressed with their exceptional track record and commitment to delivering consistently exceptional playing conditions. OB’s resources and expertise will certainly go a long way towards restoring these two fine layouts to their rightful place among the top golf experiences in the South Valley.”
Luke Beardmore, senior vice president of agronomy, construction and landscape for OB Sports said there’s plenty of work to do to get the courses back to their former glory, but the company is already at work.
“In some areas around the property, the soils have degraded due to the poor quality of the water,” he said. “These soils essentially can become toxic to growing turf grass, which presents a challenge that will take a sustained effort to overcome.”
Beardmore said the company’s first goal is to establish good quality turf that will create consistent playing conditions across the properties. They’re also focusing on the details of cart path edging, bunker edging, clubhouse presentation and cleanliness.
“We want everyone to know that we are committed to making these courses truly great again, but that it takes some time to execute such a massive turn-around effort,” he said. “We feel that we have established the right team (which includes a very successful superintendent that has worked for OB Sports for 11 years), we have the right vision, and we believe that we have the correct amount of resources dedicated to make this happen. We are very excited to prove to everyone that these courses should be considered ‘must-play’ destinations again very soon.”
Foothills Golf Groups owns and operates three golf facilities in Phoenix — Ahwatukee Country Club, Club West Golf Club and Foothills Golf Club — as well as The Duke at Rancho El Dorado in Maricopa. The same company also owns the Ahwatukee Lakes course, which was closed in 2013 when the owner said the course was losing money. The property has been minimally kept up since then.
Recently, two Ahwatukee residents filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Lakes property, alleging a breech in contract because the owners have not followed the CC&Rs that govern the land by keeping it as an operating golf course.
