December, holidays, family, and giving thanks.

Words we’ve come familiar, and almost complacent, with during the winter season, limiting the ideas to just people; family and friends.

The Ahwatukee Foothills community is no stranger to pets, and can arguably be titled as a community that values and integrates them into everyday lifestyles unlike any other.

But the holiday season is a time where euthanasia lists are at their all-time high, according to Petco general manager C.J. Freas in Ahwatukee.

“Every year at Christmas people get pets, but if training or other factors don’t go well, they send them to shelters,” Freas said.

As the shelters get more and more dogs and cats, overcrowding happens.

In an attempt to offset the numbers and give pets a home for the holidays, Petco will be hosting its first ever Tour de Petco Home for the Holidays Mega-Adoption event.

Come one, come all, and help Petco give these pets a real home for the holidays.

Closing down half of the retail store’s parking lot tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., animal lovers can enjoy the mild, winter weather, enter contests, hear music spun from a DJ, and browse through nearly 20 rescue organizations and shelters.

Two cat rescues and a sugar glider rescue will also be participating.

“For Petco, we’re not looking to make tons of money, this is helping the animals that in the future will need the help,” Freas said.

While an interesting mash-up with a major, retail pet chain offering such a grassroots event, Freas assures that the store is eternally grateful for its surrounding community.

“Ahwatukee is the best,” Freas said. “We have the highest adoption rates in the district and it’s because of the community caring and opening their arms to these animals.”

Food vendors and catering from Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and On the Border will provide food for the afternoon. Fundraisers and a silent auction during the event will raise money for each participating rescue and shelter.

“We just love our community, there are no words,” Freas added.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Petco is located at 5011 E. Ray Road, just off Interstate 10.
