Two weeks ago, Batman and comic fans were excited that the day finally came for the midnight release of “The Dark Knight Rises.” It was the epic trilogy finale and fans were stoked to see how director Christopher Nolan was going to finally finish Batman’s story. So fans piled into movie theaters across the nation for the midnight release ever so excited as they could be, never knowing that a sad tragedy was about to unfold in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.
A selfish and twisted young man made a choice on July 20 — a choice that has affected millions of lives. Not only did he affect the lives of those who lost a loved one, but the other victims that were hurt and traumatized that were there as well, frequent moviegoers to where even some are skeptical to go see a movie now, as well as the actors that portrayed the characters in “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Christian Bale, the actor who portrayed Batman in all three of Nolan’s Batman movies, did something very touching after this tragic event happened. He physically went to the memorial in Colorado in honor of the victims who sadly lost their lives and he visited the other victims that were still recovering in the hospital. A lot of people nationwide now have a tremendous amount of respect for what Bale did. What he did was such a moving gesture. The actor in real life who portrayed Batman on the big screen, from the movie that sparked a tragic scene, Bale decided to put away his celebrity card for a day and pay his respects to the victims of the movie theater shooting.
A lot of times in our society, people are fixed on things such as social status, whether they are middle, lower, or upper class, if their car is newer, faster, and more expensive than their neighbors’, if their house is the biggest one on the street and whether or not their children go to the very best and most expensive school. Comparing ourselves to our neighbors is something we surely all are a little guilty of at least at one point or another. The problem with comparing is that we lose sight of what truly matters in society — helping others. In some cases, helping others means donating food, time, money and clothes, while other times helping others means being there for others in times of need or mourning. Bale just showed the world exactly what Batman stands for. It doesn’t matter what your social stature is, but if you are able to help others then you have a humane responsibility to do so. He could have just sat back, did nothing, and watched his box office numbers be the best in the movie industry of 2012 so far while this tragedy was still going on, but instead he put his celebrity status aside for one day and showed the world that he cares about others by showing up for emotional support. He showed his fans that he profoundly cares that this happened to them, and that he is truly and deeply sorry.
Although Bale is an actor and just played a movie role of Batman, to me he feels like a true hero in real life. He reminds us that at the end of the day, we all are equal despite the materialistic items we own, fancy jobs we might have, or how much money we make. We are all human beings who need support and love from one another, and when a terrible tragedy like this happens, we all need to put our statuses aside and come together to help each other as a community. By showing up in Colorado, Bale also showed the world that the true heroes are all of the victims of this devastating tragedy.
I know I speak for the Ahwatukee Foothills community when I say that our hearts go out to the Teves family and for all of the victims involved in this sorrowful tragedy.
