You’ve heard of scrapbooking and you know a little about Make a Wish, right? Add these together and you create the gift of a memory book for a very ill child. That’s what Crops of Luv, right here in Ahwatukee Foothills, is all about.

My scrapping friends went to Crops of Luv last weekend and we were really moved by what they do.

Crops of Luv is a group of ladies, Jody McNelis and Roberta Baker, who have a mission of “Preserving memories and dreams because a life documented is a life remembered...”

When families go on their “Wish” trip to Disney World, Sea World or Give Kids The World, it’s a dream come true for many of the children and their families.

Afterwards, they send their photos of the trip to Crops of Luv. From there volunteers put together scrapbooks.

“We delivered one little girl’s album to her, and from then on all she wanted to do was sit in her grandma’s arms and have the book read and shown, over and over ” McNelis said. The books are not “get them done as fast as you can books,” they encourage scrap artists to make the pages “full of bling,” “interactive,” using the child’s favorite colors. In order to do this, lots and lots of supplies are needed. Specific themes needed are Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World papers, killer whales, “Harry Potter,” “Lorax,” pirates, Pixar Cricut Cartridge, and much more.

Crops of Luv has a goal of making 250 albums this year, but the need is much greater than that. It costs $250 to $300 per book from the paper, embellishments, cut-outs, album and shipping costs.

They have scrapbook supplies donated all the time, but they need funds for shipping. If asked what their wish list would contain, it would include assistance with writing a grant, fundraising/shipping funds, and an easily accessible air-controlled storage place for all the items donated.

McNelis worries about the coming heat: “We’ve had items destroyed by the heat, and we really need some place to store items properly.”

Just like my group of friends that went to scrap last Saturday, in 10 hours we completed two albums. Your group can do so much more than actually scrapbook.

There are things that need colored, cut out, sorted, organized and prepared for future crops. Anyone is encouraged to help. Thursdays are volunteer nights. They host crops all over Arizona; they have Tucson and Sedona events coming up.

McNelis says that they can use anyone’s help. She told us about three teen boys who recently showed up to one of their events.

At first they were slightly skeptical. However, they got into a competition of who could cut “Dora the Explorer” out better. They ended up working for more than three hours!

The stories that McNelis told us of how much impact these books make on these kids, many whom are terminal, the more we wanted to help. These books are memories for a lifetime for the parents, but they are made for the children.
