The city’s budget may have been slashed, but that doesn’t mean the Pecos Park Community Center is out of business.

In fact, it’s very much alive and kicking, said Cynthia Brown, who has been facility manager since last month.

“We haven’t cut our classes because of budget cuts,” said Brown.

In fact, there is a push to expand programs and services, but with no additional staff or money, Brown is searching for businesses and organizations that want to partner with the park to sponsor events.

“We’re going to get back to basics,” said Brown, who wants to increase special events and activities in the park, from Easter Egg rolls to Halloween parties to movies in the park.

Summer programs for youth span the gamut from babysitting certification to karate, tumbling and zumba dance.

For adults, classes include yoga, line dancing, West Coast swing dance, self defense and the Butts and Gutts fitness class.

Plus, Brown said she is looking for local instructors with special interests, from music to dance to art, who are interest in teaching new classes. “Something to spice up the program,” she said.

Brown came to Pecos Park in March when longtime facility manager Sue Laskovsky was reassigned to Eastlake Park near downtown Phoenix as part of the changes that occurred as the new city budget took effect.

Brown encourages people with ideas for new programs or for businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring activities to e-mail Cynthia.L.Brown@phoenix.gov.
