After being rained out last month, the Phoenix Police Department and the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA are teaming up give the community day at Desert Foothills Park another try. It will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 20.

The event provides an opportunity to see K-9 officers and their dogs up close and watch the canines go through their paces. There also will be on display one of the police department’s armored vehicles used by the SWAT team.

And the Y staff also will be leading games and activities, including an active obstacle course and a mobile rock wall.

It will promote and benefit the YMCA’s Strong Kids and Family Campaign and the police department’s K-9 program.

Officer Bryan Hanania, a K-9 officer who lives in Ahwatukee Foothills, said there will be raffles of police and K-9 memorabilia along with T-shirts and gift certificates, which will be split between K-9 program and the Y’s Strong Kids and Family campaign.

“The grand prize, if you want to call it that, is a free private K-9 demonstration for one student’s class at school,” Hanania said.
