Mountain Pointe High School’s G-Wing lobby will morph Thursday into an art gallery, and the winter art show will provide some of the school’s budding art students with their first chance to present their work to the community.

The art show will feature the work of beginning through advanced students, with pieces ranging from paintings to computer art, ceramics and photography. Art students will be stationed by their work to provide demonstrations for other students throughout the day, and a reception with refreshments will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the lobby for students, parents and other members of the community.

“The beginning level students are very nervous about showing their work, but part of our job is to bring them out of their shells,” said Suzanne Idler, graphic design teacher.

Idler’s computer art classes started off the semester learning Photoshop basics by working in abstract.

“For their art show projects, my students took a series of photographs and blended them together to create themed montages,” Idler said. “They’re learning advanced skill sets that they will be able to use in their careers when they get older.”

Steve Adams’ advanced photography students created documentary-style projects that he coined “Student Life.”

“My students took images of other students at school, which will eventually be shared with Mountain Pointe’s yearbook staff and displayed on the school’s Web site,” Adams said. “They always complain about how much work it is, but when they’re done they find it rewarding to have work for the whole world to see.”

Ceramics teacher Karan Lytle has first-year students all the way up to those from South Mountain Community College presenting work in the art show. Her beginning students spend one semester hand-building ceramic work and another semester creating pieces of art on the ceramic wheel. They also learn different glazing techniques.

“I have students in the show who have been with me for all of their four years at Mountain Pointe, and some of them have their own wheels and kilns now,” Lytle said.

Mountain Pointe has six teachers in its art department, and students from their classes will fill up the entire G-Wing lobby with their art work. The show is entirely student run, right down to the refreshments that will be served.

Alumni from Mountain Pointe’s art department have gone on to study at prestigious schools, and many are now art teachers themselves throughout the Valley.

Admission to Mountain Pointe’s Winter Art Show is free, and the school is located at 4201 E. Knox Road. The show will take place in the G-Wing lobby from 6 to 8 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 14.
