Editor’s note: This is the final in a two-part series on the history of Mountain Park Ranch.
KENTON, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle has never been for the faint of heart.
LOS ANGELES — With less than a week to go before the Academy Awards, the Dolby Theatre in the heart of Hollywood is on lockdown. Guards stand at every door, and handlers with walkie-talkies keep a close eye on any visitors.
After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last June, I was forced to cut back on reviewing movies every week. In between chemo treatments and sleeping for days on end, I’ve made an effort to see as many new releases as possible. Now at the start of a promising new year, I am happy to announce that I am virtually cancer free. Even better, I have a lot of truly great films from yesteryear to talk about.
Phoenix is at a crossroads. The last few years our city made significant “big decisions” securing financial security. We are now entering a period where “big ideas” need to take hold. Ideas that move our city ahead of our competitors in this new global economy.
One thing is certain: 2014 will be an interesting year for the real estate industry. The housing recovery will continue and Phoenix will see home-price appreciation continue in 2014. A new set of mortgage rules will emerge. Here are some of our housing market predictions, projections and expectations for 2014.
LOS ANGELES — Digging into deep-pocket gluttony, Martin Scorsese's dark comedy "The Wolf of Wall Street" highlights a world rich in drugs, fast cars and private jets. The American dream is amplified, yet those indulging in it are never satisfied.

This year, like every year since 1996, thousands of lights will sparkle down Chandler Boulevard in Ahwatukee Foothills and the entire community will be welcome to attend a festival to kick off the holiday season, but there has been several times over the years when the future of the Festival of Lights wasn’t so certain.
“Keep Kyrene Strong.” You’ve seen the bright yellow signs on prominent corners in the Kyrene corridor, but what does that mean, exactly?
Tom Hanks didn’t know where the cameras were.
I am a longtime resident of Ahwatukee, raising three children as a single parent, and also having the wonderful privilege of working as a psychologist in private practice serving a wide range of individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
I was reading the guest commentary of Don Kennedy (Aug. 30) in the Ahwatukee Foothills News and decided reply. In Don’s world it looks like there are only two choices, the socialist or the patriot. Given our two party system, yes there are two choices or really are there? Is Don implying that the Democrats are socialist and Republicans are patriots? But let me not get ahead of myself.
Chamber members Nick Knight and Becky Zibert sign the Rock Wall during School of Rock's ribbon cutting/guitar smashing.
Making the decision to purchase or refinance a home is one of those major decisions most of us only make a few times in our life. With so many mortgage options available to you, choosing the right lender can be agonizing.
The government is putting its foot down on rising airfares and fees by attempting to block the latest airline merger — but for fliers, it’s already too late.
While a few Ahwatukee residents have strong opinions about the South Mountain Freeway (SMF) Loop 202, one way or the other, a majority are totally ambivalent about the road. Like most Valley residents, they are hoping for anything at all that will ease their commute by reducing stop-and-go congestion on the Interstate 10. Most of us have been paying an increased sales tax for transportation projects since 1985 and any tangible evidence of our money at work is gratifying. Since very little of Ahwatukee is south of Chandler Boulevard, the impact on most of us will be marginal.
When hot weather squelches your appetite, sip your way to refreshment with these chilling beverages.

What if I told you my latest excursion involved hanging out with the kindest people on earth, enjoying a glorious massage under a twinkling skyline, showering with my feet planted on warm, glistening rocks, and meditating to live music every evening?
And so it begins. After six years since the last substantive debates over immigration reform, the Senate Judiciary Committee recently approved the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act, the title of the legislation borne out of the months-long work of the bipartisan Gang of Eight, which includes Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake.
