Finally, our weather has cooled so we can expand our living spaces to patios, gardens and backyards. After work and on weekends we can retreat outside to enjoy the warm days and cool evening breezes we look forward to from now until next May. Weekends mean we can invite family and friends over for those famous Arizona barbecues. Special celebrations can now be planned such as an assortment of parties, fundraisers or even an intimate wedding.
Martha and Dave are in their mid-50’s and they make up the middle section of the sandwich generation. Dave’s father lives with them and his mother is in a nearby assisted living facility. They have a daughter in high school and a 26-year-old son who recently moved back home when he got laid off from his first post-college job. Baby boomers like Martha and Dave are giving up to 40 hours a week of unpaid care for elderly parents while balancing child-rearing and full-time jobs. How can they make this work?
As Santa stuffs his sleigh with popular or big ticket items this year, he may be in for a “Bah, humbug” unless he takes certain insurance precautions. Gift-givers may be “Scrooged” when they realize that some gifts may cost homeowners extra on their insurance premiums, or may not be covered at all.

So here we are, December, again. As I get older it certainly seems to get here faster every year. I feel like I was just chatting with folks about what may happen in real estate in 2013. It turned out we had some interesting things happen here in our market. The year started off strong with lots of appreciation and a great demand from buyers. The buying frenzy continued through June until it sort of fell off a cliff in the summer. When we usually see the October pick up, the government shut down for three weeks and that changed the typical cycle for that time of year. We had a nice increase in buyer interest towards the end of the year and from what we can see now the spring season will be typical for our area.
About 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, according to a survey from the University of Scranton. But the same survey shows that only 8 percent of us actually keep our resolutions. Perhaps this low success rate isn’t such a tragedy when our resolutions involve things like losing a little weight or learning a foreign language. But when we make financial resolutions — resolutions that, if achieved, could significantly help us in our pursuit of our important long-term goals — it’s clearly worthwhile to make every effort to follow through.
It’s hard to imagine anyone not liking Disney. Sure, many of us go through a phase where we think we’re too old and sophisticated for Mickey Mouse. This typically leads to our pretentious cynic phase in which our college professors open our eyes to all the stereotypes and “hurtful ethics” Disney has endorsed over the years. Films like “Escape from Tomorrow” haven’t exactly helped the company’s image either. At the end of the day, though, nobody can outrun the magic, good will, and sheer lovability attached to Disney. There isn’t a cold-hearted soul that can’t be completely won over by the mouse house … except maybe P.L. Travers, the author of “Mary Poppins.”

The holiday season is here, which can result in additional stress and anxiety for many due to time crunches, obligations and demanding schedules. Stress and anxiety interfere with immune function so stress in check is important especially since this time of year also tends to also be cold and flu season. Three immune suppressors that we have direct control over include dehydration, stress and sugar intake.
