A year after Abacus Inn shut its doors at the Ahwatukee Mercado shopping center, at the southwest corner of 48th Street and Elliot Road, a new Asian restaurant is open for business and hoping to bring customers back.

A few years ago I created a recipe for a killer barbecue sauce. It was exactly the way I like it — thick, rich, a lot savory, a little sweet and bursting with cumin, smoked paprika and so many other delicious seasonings.

How does a week of great food, good drinks and hanging out with good friends sound? That was my fortunate lot in life recently when the kids and I flew back to Tennessee to meet up with a group of college friends. The summer gathering, known as Happy Hour Week (or weekend depending on the arrangements for the particular year), has been an annual event for more than 15 years.
