    Six years ago, Janine Skinner was a mother of three who was reentering the workforce. Some of the return was financial: the aforementioned kids were just a few years away from college. While serving as a youth event chaperone, she was introduced to Minnesota-based Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). That was the beginning of a six-year whirlwind.

The main character, Marina, is a guide at the Hermitage Museum when war breaks out with Nazi Germany. She helps to pack and evacuate the million-plus paintings and art objects in the collection and then, during the first winter of the siege, lives in the cellars beneath the emptied museum, alongside other members of the staff and their families.

    I'm one of those parents. I know; it might sound like I'm using the guilty tactics my parents once did. I tell my children that while they turn up their noses at broccoli, we're fortunate to have it. Times are hard across the street, and across the globe. And because I can only imagine how people are suffering, I won't let anyone in my house take veggies for granted. Even asparagus!

    The stomachs of more than 1,300 starving children across the world will be full for a year thanks to volunteers who packed more than 500,000 meals for Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) at Mountain View Lutheran Church (MVLC) in Ahwatukee Foothills between Nov. 17 and 20.
