When I was a kid…heck, when all of us were kids, our mothers had a stack of aphorisms for any occasion. When I was 10 years old, I was convinced that all new moms were given a handbook of Snappy Sayings for All Occasions as they were packing their bag in the maternity ward, because all the moms said all the same things.

  7. article Windows 8 does many things well

    Wednesday, November 7, 2012 4:00 pm

On a recent Sunday afternoon, while checking out some football sandwiched in between the mandatory first, second and third quarter naps on the sofa, I became acutely aware that the pre-Christmas marketing blitz is in full swing and is designed to convince you that trying to live without a certain product would be a huge, life-altering mistake. This particular Sunday, it seemed the focus was on the latest portable electronic devices to include tablets, laptops and phones.

  15. article How to prevent a dog attack

    Wednesday, June 20, 2012 2:07 pm

When I was 12, I watched the movie “Cujo.” Wow. I couldn’t sleep for a week. The perception that St. Bernard’s are friendly rescue dogs was definitely tarnished by the actions of Cujo. All of us have had some encounter with an unbalanced house or stray dog that has put us on the defense. Learning HOW to handle an unbalanced dog’s actions BEFORE they occur is the key to staying calm and bite free.

  17. article Beydler: The Arizona sun can kill you

    Sunday, June 10, 2012 7:44 am

I had my stitches removed this morning. It has been two weeks since I had major surgery for malignant cutaneous desmoplastic melanoma on my upper back/lower neck. Sounds ominous right? It is. The surgery took five hours. The surgeon removed an area about 3 inches in diameter and about an inch deep. The incision is about 8 inches wide. This has been the biggest health challenge of my life.

  20. article Horne: Not too hard to share a little good fortune with those who need it

    Sunday, May 6, 2012 7:14 am

Think about being hungry. Not the “it is 1:30 p.m. and I haven’t had lunch yet” hungry. I’m talking about real hunger, like not having but one meal a day. And maybe that goes on day after day. And maybe you are watching your child go hungry.

  24. article ‘Thousand Words’ is the kind of light comedy we were expecting

    Tuesday, March 13, 2012 1:00 pm

In the opening scene of “A Thousand Words,” the camera pans through a shattered house. Broken picture frames and furniture occupy the floor. The audience then hears the voice of Eddie Murphy, informing us in a grave tone that he is going to die. At first one might assume that Murphy has gone down the Liam Neeson route and made an action thriller. That thought is quickly diminished, however, as Murphy appears on screen with a piece of duck tape covering his mouth. From there on, “A Thousand Words” is the exact kind of light comedy we were expecting.
