Denial’s worked pretty well for me so far. But as I type with trembling fingers, reality is seeping in. Just after Christmas, my family is moving. To Seattle. I know. From sunshine to rain. But then, change is as inevitable as the lights that twinkle along Chandler Boulevard during the holidays each year. And so, I have to embrace one more in a long lifetime of transitions.
Festive light displays are never far away in Ahwatukee Foothills.
From my records, the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce (AFCC) endorsed a “No Action” (don’t build) position by its final vote as members of the South Mountain Citizens Advisory Team (SMCAT) in August of 2013. Their were 18 members of the SMCAT that voted for either a “build” or “don’t build” and of that number there were 11 members that voted for a “don’t build” and our chamber was one of them.
Phoenix police and firefighters will be hosting their annual Rides for Toys event this Saturday, Dec. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Target parking lot, 4734 E. Ray Road. Police and firefighters will exchange rides in their vehicles for an unwrapped Christmas gift for Valley charities.

The tone of the discussion at the Tempe Union High School District Governing Board meeting concerning the South Mountain Freeway was very different from the discussion two weeks earlier. At the Nov. 6 meeting, the board voted two in favor, one opposed and one abstaining from voting against the Loop 202 Freeway.
Whether they knew it or not, it was a bit of a test.
The Oasis at The Foothills is a small subdivision that sits along the Foothills Golf Course, north of Liberty Ln on S 15th St. The community consists of over 100 homes on five streets. Under the blinking lights of South Mountain, Oasis homes sport a variety colors and are garnished with diverse plant life. Located down the street from Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School, residents live within the Kyrene School District as well as the Tempe Union High School District in the Desert Vista High School area. Although it is in The Foothills, this quiet neighborhood has a feeling of seclusion due to it's golf course surroundings.

A stretch of eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) near the Interstate 10 'Mini-Stack' interchange in Phoenix will be closed Saturday morning for pavement repair work, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Part of Loop 101 (Price Freeway) in Chandler also will be closed at times for pedestrian bridge work. In the wake of the downturn that launched in 2008, it’s old news by now that the construction industry took a massive hit. Nearly half of those in the construction business were forced to find work elsewhere. Today, even as the housing market — and by default the contracting industry — rejuvenates, reports over the summer showed a weaker pool of skilled labor available to meet the spike in demand for new homes. But you wouldn’t know it by all the new homes that will be available in Ahwatukee!
