Our society loves labels of all kinds. Many of us now check out the label on packaged food products before we buy them. Perhaps because we’re watching our weight, avoiding allergens, or trying to reduce the salt in our diet. Or maybe because we’re trying to make healthier choices about what goes into our body. Some of us just like to know where our fresh food is grown. When it comes to clothing, we may prefer a certain designer label, or a brand that we know fits us well. With greater social awareness of injustices around the world, many of us also look at labels so we can shop wisely for fair trade products, or avoid buying from countries with unfair or abusive labor practices. Then there are other labels such as nicknames, or descriptors that we use to conveniently label and categorize people. These labels, which are largely subjective, quite often determine our attitudes and our treatment of others. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the cruel and hurtful labels that children of all ages use to dehumanize, taunt, or exclude others.

Between “No Good Deed” and “The Guest,” September is really shaping up to be the month of home invasion/sleeping with the enemy movies. What makes “The Guest” much more interesting that other film, however, is that it’s not entirely clear if the home invader wants to be the homeowner’s friend or enemy. At some point in our lives, we’ve all had somebody we’ve wanted to get rid of, be it a school bully, sleazy boyfriend or boss. You might wish for a dark guardian angel to come to your rescue and take care of the person ruining your life. In the event that dark guardian actually did appear, though, would you be more relieved or horrified? On top of that, would you call the cops on this guy or let him do your dirty work?
After seeing a women in a wheelchair nearly hit when she went into the street avoiding a trash container that was blocking the sidewalk I called Phoenix Public Works because the majority of people in my neighborhood were blocking the sidewalk for pedestrian use with trash/recycle containers which caused wheelchairs, strollers, dog walkers, etc. to go into the street which is obviously a safety concern.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” These are the words of Simon Peter, one of Jesus’ first disciples, written to some of the first and earliest Christians. And like most words put down on paper, these instructions have not always honored the intent of the author.
