  7. article ‘The Art of Fielding’ is great for baseball fans

    Thursday, October 11, 2012 1:49 pm

As the country prepares to enjoy the 108th Baseball World Series, even those who may not be true baseball fans are often caught up in the spirit of America’s national sport. If you are indeed a die-hard baseball fan, “The Art of Fielding,” by Chad Harbach might be just the book for you. But don’t discount it even if you don’t know first base from a knuckle-ball pitch. Described by one critic as the “greatest baseball novel in a generation,” the sports theme is metaphorically much grander — that of the human condition.

  8. article ‘Pitch Perfect’ is infectiously catchy

    Thursday, October 4, 2012 9:49 am

Cheeky and snarky but with an infectious energy, “Pitch Perfect,” a comedy set in the cutthroat world of competing college a cappella groups, makes us fall in love with the very thing it’s making fun of. It’s ridiculous and predictable but also just a ton of fun, so you may as well give up and give in to your inner musical theater geek.

  16. article New York City plays huge role in ‘Rules of Civility’

    Tuesday, April 24, 2012 1:05 pm

When “Rules of Civility” appeared on several “Notable Books of 2011” lists, I thought I’d check it out. It turned out to be, if not the best, perhaps the most enjoyable read for me that year. I hesitate to say “best” because that is quite a superlative comment for a book to live up to, which may leave other readers disappointed, but I can at least say how I felt while reading it.

  22. article Twinkle is flirty and affectionate

    Wednesday, January 11, 2012 9:00 am

Twinkle is a gem of a kitty. First, she's unbelievably cute and very photogenic to boot. Second, she's a snuggler! Twinkle is an affectionate little girl that enjoys being held. She turns her purr motor on when she's being pet or otherwise snuggled by her people. Finally, Twinkle loves a good play session. She enjoys chasing balls and loves being taunted by wand toys. She'll duck in and out of her condo cubbyholes, jump high into the air, and roll around on the floor - anything that will help her capture that wand. And when she is successful, she will carry that wand away in her mouth to explain to it who is boss. Twinkle does well with other friendly kittens after an introductory period - she plays a little hard to get at first but, in no time, comes around. She does very well with her current kitty roommate.
