It may be that Arizonans know more about who is the secretary of state than the treasurer.

I have always enjoyed this time of year. Even as a child growing up in Chicago, fall afternoons meant playing baseball with a sweatshirt on or running through piles of fallen leaves, some of which were raked quite neatly and I mischievously found joy in rummaging through those piles as well.
Just a few weeks ago, Kyrene School District experienced a clear election victory for both the continuation of our Maintenance and Operations Override and our second ballot question to allow our governing board to lease, sell or exchange real property (our vacant land). We appreciate this strong vote of confidence and message of support from our community. While Kyrene has a total of 25 schools, 12 of them are in Ahwatukee, educating more than 8,000 students and employing nearly 500 staff members (many who live in the community).
It looks harder than it really is — everything starts with a first step. But when that thing you are trying to do is different or difficult, then that first step seems very hard to do.
A true story made headlines Nov. 4. A trove of approximately 1,500 works of art confiscated by the Nazis in World War II were seized in a Munich apartment. The value was estimated to be $1.3 billion by artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The news goes on to say that determining the rightful owners of the works decades after they were either sold under duress or seized could take years.
Looking for a little buddy to hang out with, go on walks, go to the Farmer’s Market, or just sit around and read the Ahwatukee Foothills News? Well, Chris is your guy! He is about the best little dog a person could want. He gets along well with other dogs, doesn’t mind little kids hanging all over him, and would possibly be OK with a feline sibling or two. Chris is a 5-year-old male Jack Russell Terrier mix who came to the Arizona Animal Welfare League because his owner fell on hard times and was unable to keep him any longer, not because of any other reason other than he no longer had a house to live in and wanted a better life for Chris than living on the streets. Chris is an absolute staff favorite and currently resides in the dog adoption manager’s office because she cannot bear to put him in a kennel because he’s just that perfect.
Is it me or does it seem this time of year things seem less stressful, more fun, and energizing?
GLENDALE – Norris Vaughan was engulfed into the sea of black.
Eight years ago, my daughter Jasmine asked if she could audition for the Ahwatukee Foothills “Nutcracker” performance. She was new to the world of ballet and dance, but I relented, and she was thrilled to get parts as a Baby Mouse and a Mini Bon Bon. And the next thing I knew, her Saturday soccer games now had conflicts with “The Nutcracker” practice — called “rehearsals,” I was quickly corrected. I kept hearing about how much fun Jasmine was having at these rehearsals, how many new friends she was making, and how she couldn’t wait for “Opening Night.” I didn’t pay too much attention. I just paid for the costumes, bought tickets for a performance, and occasionally picked her up after a rehearsal and raced her to her soccer game.
My assignment: In 700 words or less, I’m supposed to keep you and your money safe while you’re out buying for the holidays. How about I do it in 17 words and two punctuation points: do not buy gift cards, do not shop online, and do not get talked into extended warranties!
Black Friday used to be the one day where you could find bargain-basement deals on computers, TVs, game consoles, home goods, clothes, toys, and the list goes on.
With the rush of the holidays safety may take a backseat to the festivities, but local organizations are warning people to be aware this holiday season.

We have Obamacare, which can’t seem to even sign people up yet. I wonder what will happen when Obamacare gets going? The way it works is as follows: you go to your doctor about some problem that you have. Your doctor can’t diagnose, or treat you until he text messages the 15-member panel. The panel diagnoses your problem, then sends a treatment schedule to your doctor. He reads the treatment, and is required to follow this treatment, or he will be fined $100,000. His second offense will be a fine and jail time. If for some reason he doesn’t agree with the treatment he can send his opposition to the panel, then the panel will rule on treatment.
