Smiley is a 7-year-old female Beagle that Arizona Beagle Rescue (AZBR) rescued from the Humane Society along with sister, Stripey. Sadly, their family lost their home and could no longer care for the two dogs. Smiley’s foster mom says she is very sweet, lovable, and does what she’s told. She is housebroken and doesn’t mind a crate. Recently, Stripey found her forever home so now Smiley is seeking hers. She’s a little overweight, but is on a strict green bean diet with daily walks. She likes to cuddle and gets along with other dogs and children. Smiley does like to bark, but quiets down when told to.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the No. 1 cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. The top risk factors, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, diabetes and obesity are poorly treated, often with toxic pharmaceutical drugs, and most patients never reach their goals. There are also more than 400 coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors and mediators now proven.
Everyone could use a little help keeping those New Year’s resolutions to slim down. But if it means the government limiting junk food, the response is an overwhelming, “No.”
Longtime Ahwatukee Foothills resident Neal Lester was one of four editors who put together “Sapphire’s Literary Breakthrough,” a book volume exploring an author’s writing.
Just when I thought I was running out of topics to inspire me, a magazine article about “finding your happy weight” caught my attention. Voila — the writing inspiration flowed like water.
Cardiovascular fitness is generally considered to be the most important component of health-related physical fitness. Other commonly used terms for cardiovascular fitness include cardiorespiratory endurance, aerobic fitness, and aerobic capacity. The national youth physical fitness test (FITNESSGRAM), developed at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, is now offered as a cooperative program with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). The recommended test for youth in the FITNESSGRAM battery is called the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER).
A new report by the state Department of Weights and Measures shows some Arizona travelers may have been cheated at the airport.
Matt Liringis likes to be in control.
It’s the holiday season and time for the obligatory “pep talk” to get you through without a lot of weight gain. But I just can’t bring myself to bore you with another “holiday tips and tricks” article. Frankly, we all know pie is a lot of calories, getting drunk usually leads to regret, and no one “deserves” cheese balls on tooth picks.
Insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes and obesity (diabesity) are global epidemics that continue to rise and come with major health consequences. Type 2 diabetes is commonly associated with poor diet and inactivity. However, there is now evidence of autoimmunity in Type 2 diabetes.
Parents of school-aged kids may remember taking a physical fitness test that involved running the 50-yard dash and performing a zig-zag run (shuttle run) along with other tests such as the pull-up. Grandparents may remember throwing a softball, running or walking 600 yards, or doing the flexed arm hang. Over time youth physical fitness tests have changed. Now the national test, called FITNESSGRAM, produced by the Cooper Institute in Dallas and co-sponsored by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and the American Alliance for Health Physical Education and Recreation, includes test items that relate to health rather than sports-related test items included in earlier tests.
You know about productive workspaces and productive systems, but how about productive clothing and productive body size?
I just read an article published in the International Journal of Obesity that discussed the impact of doctors’ words on patients when talking about obesity.
New research powerfully strengthens the case against soda and other sugary drinks as culprits in the obesity epidemic.
The news is packed with headlines aghast at the recent report that Americans waste 40 percent of their food. Many are springing into action to connect food banks and shelters with restaurants, or find creative ways to compost or biofuel the leftovers. I’ve also seen reminders to “eat what you purchased.” Consumers are feeling guilty and to blame.
The investment world can be complex — so you may not want to navigate it alone. But when it comes to getting professional advice, you certainly have an abundance of choices. How can you know which approach is right for you?
Over the past few years, if you’ve taken out a mortgage or another consumer loan, you’ve probably welcomed the low interest rates you may have received. But as an investor, if you’ve kept any retirement savings in fixed-rate investment vehicles, you may have seen low rates in a less favorable light. And that’s why it may be time for you take a closer look at your financial strategy for working toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

Apparently we’ve found a gluttony gene (published online in the journal Nature Medicine). For those that have compulsive needs to eat non-stop, some scientists believe this gene, and its role in signaling fullness, is implicated. A genetic role of the dice could be to blame for our poundage.

Type 2 diabetes can be fought with the right mindset, motivation and education, say YMCA lifestyle coaches who want to help those who are at-risk of obtaining the disease.
Maggie just loves to have her belly rubbed, almost as much as she loves to go for walks. And since she is a little more “big-boned” than we’d like her to be, walks are a great thing to help thin her down a bit. This sweet girl has had a bit of a sad life. In her young life she has already been abandoned at least twice. She came into the pound back in 2009 as a stray, got adopted, but then returned back to the same pound at the beginning of this year. Her last owners stated they couldn’t take care of her anymore. While this is very sad, thankfully it hasn’t affected this sweet girl’s demeanor. She is a loving, sweet gal who just wants to be loved.
There’s one universally loathed exercise: the pull-up. We helplessly dangle, barely able to grip the bar, begging our muscles to move something, and all we usually manage are wild feet kicks, if we can hang at all. We avoid the whole nonsense — how often do I “ever” need to pull myself up. Who am I? Rambo?
