With “Thank You For Smoking,” “Juno,” and “Up in the Air,” few modern directors have done a more authentic job at capturing the age we live in better than Jason Reitman. It’s actually pretty surprising that it’s taken him this long to make a movie concerning digital media’s effect on culture. What’s even more shocking is the fact that some of these innovations are barely a decade old. On top of all that, it’s only been 13 years since the 9/11 attacks, which instigated the need for every man, woman, and child to have a cell phone. We might have gotten by fine without them for years, but now it’s impossible to imagine life without any mobile devices or social networking.

A new nationwide survey by AARP shows that consumers continue to put themselves at risk of identity theft by ignoring simple protection tips like shredding personal documents, checking credit reports and locking mailboxes. But the report, along with interviews with convicted ID thieves, reveal Americans are falling even further behind in the fight to protect their identities as scam artists go digital.
If there are eight women reading this article, one of you will develop breast cancer by the age of 80. Or if there are 48,222 of us women in Ahwatukee (ZIP codes 85044, 85048, 85045), 5,787 have already or will have developed breast cancer before the age of 80; a fairly sobering thought. Equally sobering is this: if there are 48,960 men in Ahwatukee, a little less than 1 percent or 490 will develop breast cancer. (Demographic statistics came from HOMES.POINT2.com).
I live in Lakewood very near the intersection of 32nd Street and Pecos Road. The Loop 202 debate has been going on for years but on Sept 26 the final Environmental Impact Study (EIS) was released and I took note that this is becoming a reality. I read the information online and called the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to inquire about the impact the highway would have on my neighborhood. I learned that none of the houses in my area were in the right of way, but I could not imagine how an eight-lane highway with a median, appropriate shoulders, and a sound wall barrier could possibly fit in the existing space.

I’ve heard it said that parenting is a lot like surfing. One moment, we can be in the midst of serene, calm waters, peacefully floating in the sea of harmony; the next, we are immersed in an enormous riptide, trying desperately to keep our heads above water. I’ve actually never been surfing, but this sounds about right. If you are a parent reading this, you know all too well the ebb and flow of the parenting journey.
