Mountain Pointe band performance On March 6 guest artist Dr. Robert Spring, head of the Clarinet Studio at ASU, will perform with the MPHS Wind Ensemble. Mountain Pointe silent art auction The Mountain Pointe High School Band Booster is sponsoring a fundraising silent art auction featuring 28 original paintings, prints, sports memorabilia and crafts. Presidential Classroom Mountain Pointe High School student Cody Pitcher was awarded a scholarship to attend the Honeywell Scholars Presidential Classroom in Washington D.C. March 2-8. Ahwatukee Preschool registration Ahwatukee Preschool, a ministry of Mountain View Lutheran Church, will be starting their 28th year in August. Registration for fall classes will begin at 4 p.m. Feb. 27. Ahwatukee Preschool is a part-time preschool but increased their day to three hours. DV volleyball clinic Coach Ryan Tolman and the state champion Desert Vista Boys Volleyball team will be conducting an instructional clinic for boys and girls in grades four through 12. Award recognizes arts education program Phoenix schools that incorporate the arts into their curriculum are invited to submit entries for the second Mayor's School of Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education. The program, sponsored by the city of Phoenix Mayor's Office and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, will recognize schools and programs that have done an outstanding job of making the arts an essential part of education in their districts. To be considered, a school should teach all the arts (music, visual arts, dance and theater) and/or integrate them into other subject areas. Morrison Institute offers $2,500 in scholarship awards Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public Policy is now accepting applications for the Young Steward of Public Policy scholarship program. This distinctive program provides the opportunity for Arizona high school seniors to earn a scholarship award and be published. The first place award recipient will receive a $1,500 scholarship to Arizona State University; the second place award recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship to ASU. Sally Ride Science workshops Dr. Sally Ride, America's first woman in space, will blast onto Arizona State University's campus March 1 for two Sally Ride Science educational events geared toward upper elementary and middle school teachers, students and parents. The one-day professional development workshop allows teachers to explore practical ways to integrate science careers into their classroom activities. Designed for fifth through eighth grade teachers, the Educator Institute includes hands-on workshops followed by time for teachers to customize lessons and activities for their classrooms. The $30 fee includes a featured talk by Ride, lunch and materials. In addition, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a science festival for students, parents and teachers will be at the Barrett Honors College. Cheer clinics The Kyrene School District and the Arizona All-Stars are teaming up to help girls prepare for a cheer tryout with clinics through the next three months. Clinics will work on the skills necessary to be ready and confident to try out this year, next year or in two years. Curriculum includes tumbling, jumps, motions and a mock try-out. The Art Institute's Best Teen Chef Competition The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix is summoning the best teen chefs across the U.S. and Canada to The Art Institute's Best Teen Chef Competition 2008 April 12. Open to high school seniors in the U.S. and Canada, the Best Teen Chef Competition was created to encourage and recognize young culinary talent. Now in its ninth year, the competition awards more than $250,000 in tuition scholarships to The Art Institute's schools. Top prize winners in the competition can win a full-tuition scholarship toward an associate's degree, certificate or diploma program to study culinary arts at one of the more than 30 participating Art Institute locations, including The Art Institute of Phoenix. Additionally, the first place winner in the national competition will be an "Intern for a Day" at the Food Network Kitchens in New York City, receive a tour of the Food Network Studios, dinner for two at a Food Network chef's restaurant and a library of Food Network Kitchens cookbooks. Chamber Women in Business Committee offers scholarship The Women in Business Committee of the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce is offering a $2,000 college scholarship to a female high school senior attending any high school in Ahwatukee Foothills during the 2007-08 school year who is planning to pursue a business-related course of studies. The applicant must complete the entire application and supply school transcripts and letters of recommendation by the deadline on Mar. 17. Character, community involvement, entrepreneurship and coursework are all considerations in the final determination of the winner. The winner of the scholarship will be introduced at the April Women in Business Awards Luncheon, which also features a Business Expo. Barrow public service announcement contest Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is asking Arizona adolescents to share their creativity and help save the lives of children and teens. Barrow is looking for middle school and high school students to participate in a public service announcement (PSA) contest. The winners will receive $500. Students are asked to submit a storyboard featuring messages about bike safety and proper helmet use. Storyboards can be submitted in English or Spanish (or both). SMCC career expo Valley employers seeking fresh talent can reserve a booth for the annual South Mountain Community College 2008 Career Expo. The eighth annual expo will take place March 5, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the central plaza area of the college, 7050 S. 24th St. in Phoenix. Registration is $100 for the three-hour event. Sponsored by the SMCC Career Services Center, the event is one of the most popular annual career expos in the South Mountain Village area, attracting more than 100 employers and 700 attendees each year. "Speedy" language classes are short-term, four- to six-week classes geared toward the basics of conversation. More in-depth courses are taught throughout the semester focusing on a wider array of written and oral communication and culture pertinent to the chosen language. SMCC offers Montessori certification Students who complete the Early Childhood Montessori Teacher Education Certification program of South Mountain Community College will now receive the important National Montessori Certification. The SMCC program has been granted full accreditation from its parent organization, the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). The college's 21-credit certification program is one of only three similar programs among community colleges in the U.S. and is the only one in Arizona. Cost is $65 a credit hour and one-time-per-semester registration fee of $15. National Montessori Certification is necessary for any lead teacher to be employed in a Montessori private or public school. Leave No Child Inside photo contest Photos of nature and children enjoying outdoor environments are being sought for Arizona Parks and Recreation's "Leave No Child Inside" photo contest. Start taking pictures today as entries must be postmarked by May 1. The purpose of the "Leave No Child Inside" theme is to encourage parents to take their children to national, state, county and city parks to enjoy nature and recreate in Arizona's natural areas. Prizes will be awarded for the best photos. Categories for photos include "Urban Experience," "Leave No Inner Child Inside," "Kids and Critters" and "Most Unique Experience."
