Feeding Super Bowl visitors a year after New York's restaurant scene did it is a hard act for any city to follow. But for downtown Phoenix, the NFL's big game is a chance to simply score some points as a major culinary player. The city's mission: To simply get the word out that the desert city is a foodie's oasis.
The O’Jays helped put the “Philly Sound” on the map and were a staple of 1970s radio. Their 50-year career produced several R&B classics, including “Back Stabbers,” “Love Train,” “For The Love of Money,” “I Love Music” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.”
Usery Mountain Regional Park offers Progressive Fitness Hikes through the desert on the outskirts of Mesa and Apache Junction. Beginning Jan. 17, the series will feature a new hike every Saturday through Feb. 21. Each trek increases in length and difficulty in order to prepare for the grand finale hike — a 7.5-mile loop around Pass Mountain.
Christmas is right around the corner, and the Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band will perform its “A Concert for the Holidays” at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC) for the enjoyment of the entire community.
Welcome to the holidays! The time of year where we often feel nostalgic, reawaken traditions and learn to create some new ones. Like many of us here I grew up somewhere else. I have a big family and every year we enjoyed the same celebrations, the same food, and had a wonderful time. When I came out here in my early 20s, my second Christmas I had my family come out to Arizona (much better weather than New York City). This was my first holiday away from home and I was really disappointed I wouldn’t have my same holiday food, same people, and same home. At the time I had three roommates, all from the Midwest. Their families were coming to our holiday dinner as well as some friends. Wow, what an experience I wasn’t expecting.
Still racking your brain for gifts? Forgo another trip to the mall or evening spent scouring Amazon.com, and look to one of these local experiences instead. They’ll leave less mess under the tree and a memory that will last a lot longer than that “Guardians of the Galaxy” Blu-Ray sitting in your cart.
During my time as mayor, I’ve operated with a bedrock principle when it comes to education: that every Phoenix child — regardless of their neighborhood or how much their parents make — should have access to a quality education that puts them on the path to success.
