Information from the United States Census Bureau indicated that Arizona’s estimated population for 2013 was 6,626,624 which is a 3.7 percent change from just three years ago in 2010. Private non-farm establishments in 2012 was 131,375. Total firms in 2007 was 491,529. Arizona State University student population in the city of Tempe alone is 38,735 undergraduate enrollment on a 630-acre campus. Having a healthy population of college students drive the apartment and rental housing and retail markets in those cities in the upward scale. ASU’s growing footprint in downtown Phoenix has helped draw more restaurants and bars as well as draw high technology companies in the area.

Once again Mesa is being left in the dust. In just the past few years, downtown Gilbert has become an evening destination to rival downtown Tempe. There are currently over half-a-dozen exciting and different restaurants within two blocks and there are more coming! Combine that with the Hale Centre Theatre and a couple can dine before a play, enjoy the play, then have a cocktail afterwards, all within easy walking distance.
Our community has seen its fair share of monsoon storms over the years, but when the remnants of Hurricane Norbert rolled through the Valley on Sept. 8, Phoenix neighborhoods saw record-breaking rainfall and historic flooding.
In the opinion pages of the Aug. 29 Arizona Republic, readers were told for the second time in August about the growing gang problems in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community, problems that have spread beyond Salt River and into the East Valley and beyond. Gangs have long been a problem there and continue to grow in boldness. Last May gangsters murdered a Salt River police officer across the street from an upscale Scottsdale neighborhood. Attacks on police and community members are all too common.
