  3. article Times have definitely changed

    Thursday, March 21, 2013 3:34 pm

The pilot had just given the all-clear for electronic devices, which left me free to rummage under the seat in front of me for my laptop. I was taking a moment to consider the barbarism that allows airline passengers to push their seats back into my head when the kindly older woman next to me inquired if I was on a business trip. I think the PowerPoint deck and the calculator I pulled out of my briefcase tipped her off.

  5. article Pity the clueless man on Valentine’s Day

    Tuesday, February 12, 2013 7:49 am

Gift giving in February is fraught with danger for any guy. Don’t give chocolate if she’s on a diet, but if you don’t give chocolate you might be implying that you think she’s fat. Jewelry has to be precisely the right style for your beloved, without her telling you what she wants. The card can’t be funny; it has to be romantic, but it can’t be schmaltzy.

  8. article ‘New York the Novel’ shows effects of history on the people

    Wednesday, November 14, 2012 12:00 pm

Edward Rutherford has been writing historical sagas for more than 20 years but I just discovered him this summer with “New York, the Novel (2009).” After a passionate reading, I wanted heartily to recommend but hesitated — would most readers consider it “old news?” However, when Hurricane Sandy recently ravaged the East Coast, I felt compelled to do the review as it certainly wrote another chapter in the history of this amazing American city from 1664 to the year 2009.

  16. article We NEED community gardens

    Friday, June 22, 2012 8:04 am

As I drive around the Valley, I always notice the open land and most of the time it is zoned for commercial use or housing and quite honestly, this makes me a little angry. Do we really NEED another strip mall? Another apartment complex? More houses? I find it interesting that developers feel the NEED to continue to build more buildings, but yet there are “For Lease” signs everywhere, businesses, apartments and homes. Am I the only one who has wondered, “Why do we need more buildings?” I doubt it. I believe we need community gardens.
