Arizona Diamondbacks legend Luis Gonzalez was inducted into the Latin American Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday in Laredo, Texas. Gonzalez was the 16th Major League Baseball player to be inducted into the Latin American Sports Hall of Fame that will also honor Tino Martinez as well as seven additional athletes and professionals this Saturday.
Horizon Honors graduate Jessica Laflin has continued to progress in her volleyball at Central College in Pella, Iowa. The 6-foot middle/outside hitter as she earned all academic honors for the Iowa Conference, while finishing with 161 kills with 58 digs and 29 blocks in 21 matches.
John Buchanan of Ahwatukee graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Corrina Chikos of Ahwatukee graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California Lutheran University (CLU). With an enrollment of 4,200 students, CLU offers undergraduate and graduate programs within the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management and Graduate School of Education.
Mark Pettibone of Ahwatukee participated in Gonzaga University’s graduation exercises during a Commencement Ceremony in May in Spokane’s Veterans’ Memorial Arena. Pettibone graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies.
Kayla Peterson of Ahwatukee graduated magna cum laude from St. Olaf College. Peterson is an environmental studies and sociology/anthropology major. Peterson was also named to the dean’s list for spring 2013 semester at St. Olaf College. The dean’s list recognizes students with a semester GPA of 3.75 or higher on a four-point scale.
Armani Del Franco, a 2010 alumnus from Horizon Community Learning Center, graduated from the University of Arizona Honors College with a bachelor’s degree in finance and entrepreneurship within three years. Del Franco graduated summa cum laude. During his tenure, he was on the dean’s list with distinction, president of Eller Scholars and volunteered within the Tucson community serving others. He was also recognized as an Eller Centurion and Eller Excellence Fund member. In his spare time, he participated in the university’s intramural program, as a defender on the Inner Tube Water Polo Champion’s team, the Yuma Polar Bears.
Jocelyn Botero, a 2009 alum of Mountain Pointe High School, has graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. She was on the dean’s list all four years of college with an overall GPA of 3.8 (summa cum laude).
Molly Barlow of Ahwatukee-Foothills recently graduated summa cum laude and alpha chi from High Point University in North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in coaching. Barlow played four years of NCAA Division I volleyball and finished her career as the eighth player in HPU’s Div. I history to reach 1,000 career digs. She was named the 2012-2013 Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Olivia Maiefski, a 2009 alumnus from Mountain Pointe High School, graduated from the University of Arizona Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in speech, language and hearing sciences and a minor in Spanish. Maiefski graduated summa cum laude.
Mary Myles, a 2009 alumnus from Desert Vista High School, will graduate from the University of Arizona Honors College this month with degrees in marketing, business management and entrepreneurship from the Eller College of Management.
Jordan Skinner of Ahwatukee has graduated from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Skinner graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in theatre arts. Skinner was among 672 students who were eligible to participate in the 49th annual undergraduate commencement on May 12.
Local student Erin Gaughan graduated from the University of San Diego magna cum laude on May 27. Gaughan earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies. Gaughan completed the requirements for graduation in January and walked in the May ceremony.
Lifelong Ahwatukee resident, 2008 Mountain Pointe graduate, and former Chicago Cubs batboy, Casey Cichocki, received his bachelor’s degree in television, film, news media on May 19 with magna cum laude honors from San Diego State University.
