  13. article Signing Day: Masel gets a shot at Washington

    Wednesday, February 1, 2012 1:35 pm

The best story of the day on national signing day came from someone who didn’t sign at all.
    At least not yet.
Desert Vista senior Ryan Masel nearly quit football two years ago when a head injury forced him to the sidelines. Instead of walking away completely, he started playing around with long snapping.
“It was a way to stay in the game,” Masel said. “I asked coach (Dan) Hinds if it was something I could try, and it all worked out from there.”
While Masel didn’t sign a letter of intent on Wednesday like his teammates JJ Dielman (Utah), Mike Arredondo (New Mexico), Matt Smith (Cornell) and Dominic Kereluk (Colorado-Pueblo) did, he is headed to Washington with preferred walk-on status.
“I called the coach and went to a camp over the summer,” Masel said. “Their guy was graduating this year and I was told that I could walk on. I have to go up in the summer and if I win the spot then I will be on full scholarship, starting at the first game.”
Masel is just one of several preferred walk-on guys from Desert Vista. Punter Eric Camarillo will do the same this year at Utah where the Utes have a senior punter in place so he would get a shot the following year.
Thunder defensive back Ryan Wagner and wide receiver Matt Geranen will have preferred walk-on status at Northern Arizona, while place-kicker Scotty Goldfein will receive a partial athletic scholarship at Division II Azusa Pacific.
