Here we are, deep in the Here we are, deep in the dog days of another summer. School is out, vacation days are being cashed in, and picnic baskets are being packed. Barbecues are firing, pools are splashing, and ice cream trucks are rolling. Meanwhile, thousands, yea millions, are taking to the great American highway.
While “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was a surprisingly enjoyable reboot/sort-of prequel to the 1968 classic, the film at times came off as a trial run. It seemed like the filmmakers had a grander, richer story they wanted to tell but had to lay the groundwork first. Now that the exposition is out of the way, they’re free to tell that grander story in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Like “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the latest “Apes” film is a perfect example of how to make a sequel. It couldn’t have come at a better time considering how “Transformers: Age of Extinction” brought the summer season down a whole letter grade a couple weeks ago.
While all the attention is on The Lakes Golf Course takeover by Pulte, it looks like the Ahwatukee Country Club golf course is going downhill. There are brown patches of grass and it looks like it isn’t being fully watered. Wilson Gee says he’s going to keep the Ahwatukee Country Club golf course, but it appears it’s scheduled to die out also.
Shame on SCOTUS. Its recent 5-4 ruling to allow the owners of Hobby Lobby and other closely held, for-profit enterprises to deny certain types of reproductive health care to its women employees moves society backwards.
In a partnership with 104.7 KISS FM and the Johnjay and Rich Care for Kids Foundation, Barefoot Pools awarded a custom fence to a Valley family. The fence was provided to the couple in order to further their goal of adopting a foster child. In order to qualify for foster care, a family’s house must have a fenced-in pool, and this process brings the couple one step closer to their new addition.
When the trailer for “Edge of Tomorrow” hit awhile back, everyone seemed to have the same reaction. “So what, it’s like ‘Groundhog Day’ meets ‘Transformers?’” In a nutshell, yeah, that’s exactly what the film is. The good news is that “Edge of Tomorrow” is also one of the summer’s more surprising blockbusters. As an action picture, it’s infinitely smarter and more entertaining than any of the “Transformers” movies. While not as funny or heartfelt as “Groundhog Day,” it does have a very welcome sense of humor and genuine affection for its characters. It’s kind of a shame that this $178 million blockbuster is likely destined to get lost in the shuffle of summer movies as it’s really worth checking out.
Justin Hunsaker graduated from Skyline High School in May, but senioritis doesn’t appear to have been on his to-do list. Besides being named to speak in the school’s graduating ceremonies, he won several essay competitions.
The Torah is the soul of the Jewish people. It is our sacred story, written on a scroll and in our hearts. The Torah, or Five Books of Moses, binds the Jewish people together across place and time. It tells a tale so massive, so all-encompassing that every Jewish person finds him or herself within it.
Scarlett Johansson was given the best role of her career so far in Spike Jonze’s “Her,” a film in which she was off camera the entire running time. Where that performance solely revolved around her voice, Johansson’s performance in “Under the Skin” primarily revolves around her body. Johansson rarely speaks in this science fiction indie from Jonathan Glazer, conveying everything through nonverbal communication. Both of these stunning performances are true testaments to what a varied actress Miss Scarlett has evolved into. Her scene stealing work in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is also a nice bonus to her recent track record.
When most of us think of the word, “Diet,” we cringe. It congers up thoughts of hunger and deprivation, and it suggests that we need to make some often unpleasant changes. Yet, millions of people go on diets every day. The diet industry is a multibillion-dollar one, and it continues to grow. What is it that keeps us so tied to diets? There are many benefits to dieting, some of which are obvious. But there are a few “hidden” benefits of dieting that might explain why we love diets … and why we keep going on them.
