There is no short answer to the question — one which is asked by almost every gun control advocate in the U.S.

A DNR, or a “Do Not Resuscitate” form, is a legal order signifying that a patient does not want to be resuscitated if he or she is to suffer cardiac or respiratory arrest. It tells emergency personnel that the patient does not want CPR, endotracheal intubation, defibrillation, cardiac life support drugs or related medical procedures. This does NOT withhold medical interventions necessary to provide comfort or to alleviate pain. You may recognize this order by its bright orange color, often found attached to the refrigerator in someone’s home. Typically, these orders are in effect for persons whom are terminally ill and prefer to avoid painful or invasive procedures at the latter stages of their life. It is important to have the DNR form easily locatable, as emergency personnel must see the form in order to honor it. DNR bracelets are also an option. These forms are available through various medical organizations or you can print your own. Contact me if you would like an electronic copy of the printable version or if you have any further questions about DNR forms.
My guns are for the purpose of protecting innocent life from deadly violence should the occasion arise in which I have the opportunity to intervene. It is my simple moral responsibility to the assailant’s targets in that instant and later and indeed to the common good and to gentle civilization itself that I do so if I am able. If that occasion arose, and if I failed for not having carried my gun, my life would become a living hell of remorse and guilt.

Edward Rutherford has been writing historical sagas for more than 20 years but I just discovered him this summer with “New York, the Novel (2009).” After a passionate reading, I wanted heartily to recommend but hesitated — would most readers consider it “old news?” However, when Hurricane Sandy recently ravaged the East Coast, I felt compelled to do the review as it certainly wrote another chapter in the history of this amazing American city from 1664 to the year 2009.
I’d like to both agree (on one view) and take issue with Susan Stamper-Brown’s Guest Commentary of Aug. 3 (“The Futility of Gun Control”). I find several of her views to be very closed-minded and illogical, as I do those of many people who advocate no attempt at sensible gun control.
Few plants adorn arbors or trellises as beautifully as flowering vines. They also can enhance the landscape with fragrance, provide shade and screen unsightly views.

How did Joe Arpaio happen? I ask that because, after almost 20 years in our midst, his time as sheriff may soon be coming to an end.

I sympathize with the upset throngs participating in "Occupy (fill-in-the-blank)." I'm upset, too! But, the blame for the current economic situation needs to be shared among all responsible parties.
