For individuals who are unable to legally marry or who simply choose not to, there are unique considerations around beneficiary planning for your retirement assets. Under the current rules, the IRS does not recognize domestic partners as spouses for purposes of retirement account planning. Rather, partners are considered to have the options available to non-spouse beneficiaries.
On Jan. 14, President Obama told us he had a pen and a phone and he wouldn’t be waiting for legislation from Congress before he used them to influence the economy and affect employment. He’s been saying that for five years. Why should we believe him now?
My personal mission is to be a spark that ignites positive, sustainable change in the lives of youth. Thankfully, I have an opportunity to partner with key stakeholders in the process of fulfilling this mission (i.e. parents).
After attending a political meeting the other night, I’m convinced some people have forgotten what our great nation is all about. Have we forgotten “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?” Once upon a time, those God-given rights were the reality of life for this free nation.
Why should government take so much of the bread of our labor? Are we to be slaves? Can’t we just tax the rich? The answer is: not really. Ask yourself: from where do the rich get their money? The rich get their money from us. When we purchase various products, we pay the seller; and the seller delivers a product. How does government taxation compare? We give our tax dollars to the government, but what do we receive?
“That movie would have been infinitely better if it had been shown in 3-D.” I cannot speak for the rest of the movie going population, but this is one sentence I will never utter walking out of a cineplex. That is not to say 3-D technology is completely expendable. With the right movie, 3-D can be effectively exploited and have an enriching impact on a cinematic experience. In a majority of cases though, 3-D merely acts as a shameful method for the studio to increase the ticket price. Some people buy into the assumption that 3-D makes a movie appear more realistic and integrates the audience into the action. When not properly executed, however, 3-D can have dark, dreary and distracting consequences on a film originally shot in 2-D. In that sense, 3-D not only robs the audience of an extra $3, but also takes them out of the motion picture.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The ranks of America's poor are on track to climb to levels unseen in nearly half a century, erasing gains from the war on poverty in the 1960s amid a weak economy and fraying government safety net.
In “Dumbing down the American Dream” (AFN, April 29), Susan S. Brown exposes herself as a gullible victim of lying Republican propaganda, totally unconfused by readily available facts. Brown’s claim that the Carter 1980 recession was even worse than the 2008 Bush recession is a preposterous joke. Carter’s final year had positive gross domestic product (GDP) growth. But in Bush’s final year, GDP suffered a catastrophic 2.7-percent decline, worst performance in more than a half century, and lost more than 4 million jobs.
