In high schools across the nation today, teenagers will dutifully shuffle in to their classes, take their seats, and learn facts that they could easily Google. In doing so, our schools waste both the teachers’ and the students’ time and energy (and the taxpayers’ money) by focusing too much on memorization, too much on information that anyone with an internet connection and a vague understanding of how to use it can find in less than ten seconds.
As a taxpayer, I expect emergency responders to be able to find and help me in case of an emergency. Unfortunately, location accuracy standards are so outdated that when someone dials 911 from a cell phone, emergency responders don’t have the tools they need to locate them. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) estimates that updating our emergency response system would save roughly 10,000 lives each year.
Like many middle-class parents, we promised our kids that we would pay for their college education, a reasonable promise in the 1980s from two parents who were teachers. We are still paying off their college loans in 2014, yet we feel lucky compared to students and families who are paying off college loans accrued between 2008 and 2014.
I think I am not alone in growing so tired of Don Kennedy’s “rants” in the AFN. Surely there has to be a more productive and community-embraceable dialog than his extreme “right-wing” discourse and that of the opposing Nancy Pelosi-ish left. The best thing for our country is for those of us in the moderate middle to take back the discussion and elect public servants who will serve the interest of the vast (and too-often silent) majority of our citizens.
The city bus service is a poor transportation system. It’s slow, there are so many stops to pick or drop single passengers. It doesn’t pick you up where you are nor drop you off where you want to be. It is almost as expensive as owning a car. Users don’t feel the cost because the bus system is subsidized. Basically, the present bus system is not the best.
There have been many articles about Global Warming, carbon cap and trade, and sequestration of carbon dioxide. When writing about Global Warming they always indicate that its main cause is CO2 in the atmosphere, but CO2 has a Specific Gravity of 1.4, meaning that it is heavier than air, so can’t be found in the atmosphere. This is a ground hugging gas, that has positive qualities, as when it and rainwater impinge on plant life photosynthesis happens, causing plant life to emit oxygen.

Recently, three competitive bicyclists training in the far East Valley were run into and critically injured by a driver who was reportedly adjusting her GPS device. As a bicycling advocate, I’m very upset by this. But, this story and situation is much larger than cycling. It’s about attitudes and behavior behind the wheel.
