Mike McClellan asks why we are so shocked that 6,500 reports of child abuse were not investigated (“Why won’t our government think of the children?” AFN, Dec. 6). I am not surprised. I came to Arizona over 20 years ago as a Child Protective Services (CPS) worker. I had been a part of a unit in California in which all of the workers had master’s degrees in social work or family therapy. Most of our cases were families who had come to the attention of the agency but were not severe enough to involve the Juvenile Court. Families voluntarily accepted prevention services. Not surprisingly, we had the lowest per capita foster care placement in the country. Even when our cases were in court, the system — from the judge to the attorneys representing the parents — held as a central principle the best interests of the children.

Power Down America, LLC., Ahwatukee
In its sedulous efforts to accelerate the already rapid dumbing of America, Fox News is intensifying its suppression of economic facts. In John Stossel, Fox evidently has a sincere but stupid dispenser of preposterous misinformation.
In the wake of the downturn that launched in 2008, it’s old news by now that the construction industry took a massive hit. Nearly half of those in the construction business were forced to find work elsewhere. Today, even as the housing market — and by default the contracting industry — rejuvenates, reports over the summer showed a weaker pool of skilled labor available to meet the spike in demand for new homes. But you wouldn’t know it by all the new homes that will be available in Ahwatukee!
Generally speaking, if you’re efficient at a particular task, you’ll get good results without wasting effort. As you’ve already learned from your life experiences, it’s usually far better to be efficient at something than to be inefficient — and that’s certainly true with investing.

The Internet and subsequent breakthroughs in the mobile, social and other digital media are affecting profoundly the way consumers get — and, increasingly, give — news, entertainment and shopping information.
