Scottie was abandoned at a vet’s office by his owner. He’s a very laid back cat, likes to sit up high on cabinets and survey his surroundings in the lobby of the vet’s office greeting patients and furry friends arriving for appointments. He also prefers to sleep in his own bed all curled up. He is not high energy but would like a lap or couch to sit on. He has long fur so will need regular grooming. Scottie seems to get along with everyone and is not scared of noises or people. His ears are crimped so it looks like a “Scottish Fold.” Due to a severe ear infection one ear will stay more crimped up than the other. He does not seem to mind that his ears aren’t long and pointy. He likes toys and will play, which will help him to be more active. He has been around other cats and dogs.

She is playful, likes toys, and really enjoys sitting in a cat tree to watch the world. Miranda is good with other cats, older children, and perhaps dogs. She seems very adaptable to new situations and would make a great companion to anyone who can offer her a second chance at a new life.

Florange was abandoned by his owner and left to find food and water in a local neighborhood. He is an extremely sweet 1-year-old long haired orange tabby with beautiful gold eyes. He is playful and enjoys watching the world from a great perch such as a tall cat tree or windowsill. He could use more exercise as he has gained a bit of weight but with the right diet and playtime should slim down.

The Food and Drug Administration will now allow women age 15 and older to buy the emergency contraceptive Plan B over the counter. Unfortunately, there is no “Plan B” for dogs and cats who find themselves in trouble — and that’s why it’s vital to have them spayed or neutered as soon as possible.

I’m going to say it right up front: I’m a dog person. Not only because I’m slightly allergic to cats, but also because in my opinion cats just don’t have the personality and loyalty that dogs have.

Summer brings pool parties, picnics, and — unfortunately for cats and dogs — poisonous plants. I experienced this firsthand two years ago, when my beloved dog, Pete, nearly died and needed weeks of treatment after apparently eating a poisonous mushroom.

It’s a startling and sad fact that cancer will affect one out of every four dogs and of those, more than half will die from the disease. In fact, cancer is the No. 1 disease-related cause of death in both dogs and cats, according to Morris Animal Foundation, a world leader in advancing veterinary research.

Los Angeles • Cat owners have done a good job spaying and
neutering their pets. The big issue now when it comes to felines is
population control of feral cats, and that's led to a movement by
