Commuters passing the intersection of Warner and Rural roads are now seeing red. But wait, this is all in the spirit of honoring an ancient church tradition. Ahwatukee high-schoolers, Cam and Morgan Henson, members of St. James Episcopal Church and Preschool, wanted to recapture the red door tradition and remind everyone of the history behind those red doors. So they got to work transforming the entrance gates from dull desert brown to glorious red. Their parents, Larry and Lindley Henson, and friend, Ashley Czarsty, also pitched in.

I really can’t believe the article, dated Friday, Aug. 9, on your front page, “Ahwatukee Village Planning Committee asks for correction from ADOT.”
While a few Ahwatukee residents have strong opinions about the South Mountain Freeway (SMF) Loop 202, one way or the other, a majority are totally ambivalent about the road. Like most Valley residents, they are hoping for anything at all that will ease their commute by reducing stop-and-go congestion on the Interstate 10. Most of us have been paying an increased sales tax for transportation projects since 1985 and any tangible evidence of our money at work is gratifying. Since very little of Ahwatukee is south of Chandler Boulevard, the impact on most of us will be marginal.

When you look into the future what do you see? What vision do we hold for this friendly community called Ahwatukee? Thirty years ago there was nothing this side of South Mountain except big farms and ranches fed by snaking irrigation canals. Look at us now!

Some commuters in the Phoenix metropolitan area are able to take advantage of less congested rush-hour travel in the more than 175 miles of HOV lanes within the Valley freeway system. For Valley residents driving along the Santan Loop 202 Freeway — specifically those heading eastbound toward Chandler and Gilbert — there’s a large billboard that comes into view approaching the Loop 101 interchange.
There have been many articles on the proposed Loop 202, pros and cons.
How can those who argue for building the Loop 202 through Ahwatukee on the basis of easier commutes to the West Valley also feign concern about air quality. If you are concerned about air quality, move closer to your work and commute less. Don’t build a massive highway to carry thousands of carbon-polluting vehicles. Unless of course, you are actually only worried about the pollution in YOUR backyard and care nothing for the families living in Ahwatukee.

After 24 years in the trenches, I’d like to think that I’ve mastered many of the hurdles of parenting. Four kids have been shepherded through almost all their rites of passage: kindergarten, eighth-grade graduation, and first dates.
