An attempt to open a medical marijuana dispensary at 48th Street and Chandler Boulevard has respectfully been withdrawn for now as the owner searches for a location in Ahwatukee Foothills that will be further away from homes and schools.

Seventeen-year-old Mountain Pointe student Spencer Elliott may sound like a busy student between being student coordinator and tutor king of the Totem Tutors learning program, president of the DECA Business Club and chess club co-president, but all of those are just titles he holds at school. Outside of school he’s a small business owner, professional skier and ski instructor, sits on the Tempe Union High School Superintendant’s Council; the Tempe Union High School Career and Technical Education Board; and most recently became a member of the Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee. As a side note, Elliott admits, he’s more than 90 percent deaf.

It’s a fact: I will do just about anything if my kids suggest we spend time together. It’s very important that you never share that information, as it’s hard to keep that stern, authoritarian mojo going when they really know that lurking just under that gruff exterior is the same dignity the dog demonstrates when you ask if he wants to go in the car.

The two big-school girl soccer programs in the area had a nice little run come to an end last season.

Jonathon Randolph, Taylor Oliver and Alex Mignolet competed in the 2010 National Chess Championship in Atlanta, Ga., over Mother's Day weekend.
