LOS ANGELES (AP) — Every year about this time, millions of turkeys are fattened up so American households can chow them down. But in "Free Birds," two brave turkeys make it their mission to travel back in time and get their breed off the Thanksgiving menu.
An anti-bullying allegory writ on the largest possible scale, "Ender's Game" frames an interstellar battle between mankind and pushy ant-like aliens, called Formics, in which Earth's fate hinges on a tiny group of military cadets, most of whom haven't even hit puberty yet. At face value, the film presents an electrifying star-wars scenario — that rare case where an epic space battle transpires entirely within the span of two hours — while at the same time managing to deliver a higher pedagogical message about tolerance, empathy and coping under pressure. Against considerable odds, this risky-sounding Orson Scott Card adaptation actually works, as director Gavin Hood pulls off the sort of teen-targeted franchise starter Summit was hoping for.
Believe me, I’m psyched that you have picked up running in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s because I think it’s an awesome sport with so many social, physical and emotional benefits. But I have to tell you people, there’s a segment of you out there who need to be more pragmatic in your approach to running.
Wake up! It’s time to accept that skin cancer is a big issue in Arizona. In the “Valley of the Sun” we welcome almost 365 days of sun but it certainly puts a beat down on our skin. This year the American Cancer Society expects Arizona to see thousands of new skin cancer diagnoses. The alarming increase of skin cancer even suggests that Arizona has the highest rate in the United States.
This soup is a stick-to-your ribs flexitarian special. Make it with chicken broth and prosciutto and you end up with a carnivore’s delight. Make it with vegetable stock and no prosciutto and you’ve got a vegetarian’s delight. Either way, it’s plenty hearty. The potatoes give it body and creaminess. The spinach and kale give it earthiness and a bright green color.
The outlaw romance "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" is a lyrical, sepia-toned folk tale, awash in 1970s filmmaking and the kind of stylized folksiness that pickling Brooklyn hipsters with handlebar mustaches will positively drool over.
I recently purchased a Messianic roots seal pendant. An artifact with this symbol was discovered in Israel within the past 50 years and dates back nearly 2000 years ago. Supposedly it was created and used in ancient Jerusalem by some of the earliest Jews who believed in Christ as the Messiah.
Darius the Rottweiler has a wiggle butt, leans on just about any body part he can find, loves to swim, is a very laid back, easygoing pal. He also knows some commands, listens very well, rides great in the car, likes to play with toys and while Darius likes to snuggle at night he is not overly affectionate. He was abandoned by his previous owners and while that might generally be a bad thing, we think it was a good thing. You see, Darius was not in the best shape when we saved him from the kill list. He had a skin infection along his back, was very skinny, and lacked muscle tone. Additionally, his previous owners never took care of torn ACLs on his back legs and he had hip issues. Darius gets around very well — running around the yard and the house with much vigor, wrestling with his canine foster sister who is much younger and very relentless in her play. He has already gained muscle tone and strength in his legs and they don’t slow him down.

When it comes to fitness, some people have their own agendas on why they want to get off the coach and start shedding their unwanted body mass.
Two old friends paid me a visit last week. The first slipped in without a word, freezing my mind for an instant, like the shock of ice cream gulped down too eagerly on a hot day. As we visited for a while, I noticed the familiar voice is edged with a steely insistence, somehow sharpened rather than blunted by a hunger for news of trouble, and the scent of brewing chaos. By God’s grace and through His perfect timing, there, just in nick of time, was another beloved friend knocking on the door of my heart, gently enfolding me in loving arms. This beloved voice speaks quietly, yet perfectly clearly, sharing a different story, at once both old and fresh. The voice carries words brimming with abundant life, like a lush oasis in an otherwise barren and hostile desert. Such is the power of moments of fear to paralyze our senses, and to leave us feeling isolated and lost. Such is the power of the unparalleled peace found through our faith in Christ Jesus, our Lord, in the comforting words of Scripture.

From the moment chocolate was discovered it was considered a valuable, divine and decadent treat. The first chocolate candies were invented in the 1860s by Cadbury, who was also the first to market them in a heart-shaped box for Valentine’s Day that same decade.
Dave Williams' whole coaching philosophy revolves around discipline.
Just when I thought I was running out of topics to inspire me, a magazine article about “finding your happy weight” caught my attention. Voila — the writing inspiration flowed like water.
For puppies and kittens, size really does matter.
You know about productive workspaces and productive systems, but how about productive clothing and productive body size?
New research powerfully strengthens the case against soda and other sugary drinks as culprits in the obesity epidemic.
Teenage girls may prefer the pill, the patch or even wishful thinking, but their doctors should be recommending IUDs or hormonal implants — long-lasting and more effective birth control that you don’t have to remember to use every time, the nation’s leading gynecologists group said on Sept. 20.

A recently released study on human energy expenditure (“Hunter-Gatherer Energetics and Human Obesity,” Herman Pontzer et al.) has garnered some attention in the media. The reason for all the attention? The study debunks a commonly held belief that our obesity epidemic is in large part due to our decreased physical activity.
Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from “The Artist” and “Water for Elephants,” puts in his time on the treadmill.
To be honest with you, I don’t really care where you get your chicken sandwich. The thing that interests me the most about the whole Chick-fil-A, marriage equality discussion is wrapped up in the phrase, “the biblical model of marriage.” It interests me because there are assumptions being made about a “biblical model” that simply does not hold water. The Bible does not have that much to say about marriage, and a great deal of what is said does not fit the assumptions.
