LD 18 voters deserve the opportunity to cast an informed vote, but Jeff Dial is depriving voters of that opportunity by dodging ALL LD 18 Senate Debates, including the Clean Elections Debate. His opponent, Janie Hydrick, on the other hand, has appeared at the debate venues, and answered, at length, any and all questions from debate moderators and audience members. Her answers have shown her to be the candidate who embraces the moderate values of LD 18 residents.
Although I do not write book reviews in the summer months, I do continue reading, perhaps more than ever. Lucky enough to spend summers in the cool pines of northern Arizona, I walk a lot and an audio book is my constant companion. I was having a difficult time trying to choose which book to review as I start a new season, so I elected to do mini reviews instead of one long one. I’ll try to capture their essence briefly.
Michael Keaton established early on in his film career that he’s an actor of great range. For whatever reason, though, he faded into obscurity during the late ’90s and early 2000s. Some might say that’s because he walked away from the “Batman” franchise to do movies like “Jack Frost,” “White Noise,” “First Daughter,” and “Herbie Fully Loaded.” Then again, it’s not like starring in “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin” would have done Keaton any favors either. It’s great that Keaton has been slowly resurfacing in recent years with memorable supporting work in “Toy Story 3” and “The Other Guys.” In “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” Keaton is given a leading role he was destined to play.
Ahwatukee real estate agent and longtime chamber member Christie Ellis was named 2014’s Business Woman of the Year at the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce’s Fifth Annual Palo Verde Women in Business Gala on Saturday, Oct. 25.
In high schools across the nation today, teenagers will dutifully shuffle in to their classes, take their seats, and learn facts that they could easily Google. In doing so, our schools waste both the teachers’ and the students’ time and energy (and the taxpayers’ money) by focusing too much on memorization, too much on information that anyone with an internet connection and a vague understanding of how to use it can find in less than ten seconds.
The work ethic and attitude of a candidate is indicative of the legislator that he or she will be. I have had the pleasure of working with Jill Norgaard over the past months on her campaign for the Arizona House of Representatives in Legislative District 18. I have witnessed firsthand her tireless commitment to reach voters, business leaders, and the community at large to share her vision for a better Arizona.
The city of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department (NSD) participated in National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Oct. 19-25, to raise awareness of the consequences of lead poisoning among parents and pregnant women who live in homes built before 1978.
I should have written this letter a few months ago but I might have some procrastination on my part. In case you don’t know me, my name is Scott Ryan and I was running for the State House of Representatives in LD18 as a Independent.
Like many of you, the great schools in Ahwatukee attracted us to this community. The education of our children should be important to all of us as it impacts our economy. When companies look to move to Arizona they look at the education and skills of the community and we have a lot of room for improvement.
A large beautiful cat, Pepe is super affectionate and needs a home where he can get attention and cuddle a lot. He was abandoned outside as a kitten in an Ahwatukee apartment complex. He is named after the cartoon skunk Pepe le Pew. He has a beautiful white face with gold eyes, a white body with some black spots, a very long black tail, and little forehead frown furrows.
Band is hell. Oh sure, the “American Pie” movies might have you believe it’s nothing but fun and games. Anyone who majored in music or even took band class in high school, however, knows that it’s like prepping for war. The hours are brutal, your teachers push you to be the best, and it’s literally the end of your world if you fail. You might think I’m exaggerating and to some extent maybe I am. After all, not every band instructor on the planet can be a ruthless slave driver. The instructor in “Whiplash” on the other hand most certainly is.
