The Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce’s Red, White and Beautiful event on Thursday, May 9 will feature a fashion show, vendors and a chance to be pampered, all from local Ahwatukee businesses.

Practicing what we have been preaching about the need to shop locally, the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce is partnering with a local business on our annual print Resource Guide and Directory. The Chamber’s 2013-14 Directory will be marketed, designed and produced through an agreement with the Ahwatukee Foothills News (AFN), the publisher of this newspaper and a chamber member. We believe this will be a valuable partnership for all chamber members and those who take advantage of this opportunity to get their message out to the public.

Trees in the city of Phoenix provide $9.4 million in annual benefit to residents in air quality, storm water management, energy savings, shade and aesthetics, according to the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.

Registration opens April 27 at 10:30 a.m. for Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department summer programs including full-day supervised recreation programs at 13 sites to keep kids engaged, active and safe over the summer break. The full-day programs will start June 3 and run through the end of July. In addition to the full-day programs, centers also are offering a large selection of general interest classes and sports programs. Many smaller centers also are offering free, drop-in programs during the summer.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Business is the proud host of Red, White and Beautiful and this year it is booming! Red, White and Beautiful is a unique girls’ night out of pampering and shopping just in time for Mother’s Day. Red, White and Beautiful began in June of 2010 as a fundraiser to support the community Red, White and Boom fireworks.

With opening day quickly approaching, Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino will hire hundreds at a job fair on Tuesday, March 26. Positions will be focused on food and beverage outlets. Up to 150 applicants will be hired with many being offered positions the same day. The job fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club Komatke Branch, 5047 W. Pecos Road in Laveen. Applicants are encouraged to bring their resume and photo identification for an interview.

The Farm at South Mountain, 6106 S. 32nd St. in Phoenix, will be collecting prom dresses on Saturday, March 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. Music, food, entertainment and a raffle with prizes will be available.

Karma is a domestic short-haired buff and white large male kitty. He is approximately 6 years old. Karma’s personality is one of the strong, silent types. He very much enjoys sitting on a human’s lap or sitting next to someone for some love. Getting lovin’ is his favorite thing to do. He bows his head for rubs then “collapses” upside down for some belly rubs. Karma has tested negative for FELV/FIV. He is altered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and litter-box trained. He currently calls Friends for Life’s adoption center in downtown Gilbert home.

Charles William Roloff, 97, of Phoenix passed away on March 6. He was born May 10, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Renee B. Roloff, on Nov. 17, 2004.

The Seventh Annual Ahwatukee Dog Show will take place on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center, 4700 E. Warner Road. Organizers are looking for rescue groups, breed clubs, or other dog-related vendors to join the fun. There is no cost to set up a booth for the event.
