Mountain Pointe coach Norris Vaughan guided the Pride to new heights and is being recognized nationally after the program won its first state title.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee has announced the six finalists for the 2014 Xenith National Coach of the Year Award and Vaughan made the cut.

The Coach of the Year will be announced during the U.S. Army All-American Awards Show on Jan. 3 in San Antonio, Texas. The award honors the nation’s top high school football coach for exceptional coaching abilities and leadership skills, as well as acknowledging his role as a positive influence to young Americans”

The other five candidates are Butch Goncharoff of Bellevue High in Washington, Tim “Ice” Harris of Booker T. Washington High in Miami, Fla, Claude Mathis of DeSoto High in Texas, Jason Negro of St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., and Tom Westerberg of Allen High in Texas.
