The Desert Vista freshman football team decided they wanted some real action against cancer.

That’s why coach Bernie O’Keefe told the boys they could not wear pink unless they did something meaningful. They found just the group: Curves, a local women’s fitness gym, at 4025 E. Chandler Blvd.

A few of the Curve’s patrons are breast cancer survivors, who when they found out about the Desert Vista freshmen football team needing to participate in something related to help breast cancer research were grateful to have the help. It was decided that each player would donate five things to a yard sale that took place at Curves.

The team responded in passionate fashion, donating more than 450 items which along with other donations were used to raise $1,167.12 that was gifted 100 percent to the American Cancer Society.

O’Keefe said his freshmen football players work hard on the field and are very community oriented off the field.

Kimberly Salter, owner of Curves, was excited about the help they received from the boys.
