Phoenix is organizing three gun buyback events that officials say are aimed at taking unwanted weapons out of homes and giving police a chance to see whether guns have been stolen or used in crimes.
People who exchange guns during the no-questions-asked events on May 4, 11 and 18 will get a $100 gift card for each handgun, shotgun and rifle.
A $200 gift card will be given for each semi-automatic military-style rifle.
Mayor Greg Stanton says the program is funded through a $100,000 donation to a nonprofit group that seeks to prevent gun violence.
Guns that aren’t found to have been stolen or used in crimes will be destroyed.
Officials say the gift cards will mostly likely be able to be redeemed at grocery and electronics stores.
