Griffin McDonnell, a freshman member of the Desert Vista varsity golf team, won the 13-14 age group at the Southern Arizona Junior Golf Championship last weekend at Santa Rita Golf Course.
Battling terrible wind and course conditions, McDonnell held on to win by five strokes in the 36-hole event by shooting a 31-over par 175.
He started the second day in a three-way tie and McDonnell was down by two strokes after three holes, but battled back to grab a three-stroke lead after nine holes.
That lead evaporated after 13 holes with five tough into-the-wind holes remaining. His conservative approach paid off in the difficult conditions as he cruised to a five-shot victory.
Over the two-day tournament, McDonnell had two birdies and seven pars.
