Preliminary sectional placements for the next two school years have been approved by the Arizona Interscholastic Association's executive board in a meeting on Monday.

The breakdown was created by a computer, following guidelines instituted by the AIA. Geography was the most important factor, followed by enrollment numbers at the schools.

Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe have been placed in Section III East Valley for football along with Phoenix Brophy, Scottsdale Desert Mountain, Mesa, Mesa Mountain View, Phoenix Pinnacle, Mesa Red Mountain and Mesa Westwood.

It's solid with a mix of traditional football programs, some finding their way and ones that produce quality teams year in and year out.

Division I is mostly Phoenix metro schools with a mix of Westside schools and the Yuma programs.

Section II East Valley teams are Chandler Basha, Chandler, Tempe Corona del Sol, Mesa Desert Ridge, Mesa Dobson, Gilbert, Chandler Hamilton, Gilbert Highland, Gilbert Mesquite and Mesa Skyline.

Seton Catholic is in Division IV Section II with schools out east, southeast and Tucson.

Valley Christian in Division V Section II with a mix of other area Catholic schools of comparable size along with programs like Tonopah Valley and Yuma Catholic.

Eight of the 10 games - four home games and four away games - will be determined by computer scheduling. The other two games will be chosen by the teams. As in the sectional breakdown, travel time will be the most important factor in the schedules, followed by enrollment numbers.

Schools can appeal their sectional placement by filling out an appeal form and submitting it to the AIA by Jan. 6.
