Desert Vista graduate Hunter Rodriguez injured his left throwing elbow and will have Tommy John surgery forcing him to redshirt his freshman year at Utah.
Rodriguez injured the elbow in an all-star game over the summer and prognosis led to him being shutdown.
The surgery will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who is used by many major league teams including the Washington Nationals and Stephen Strasburg.
Rodriguez went 5-4 with a 3.59 ERA for the Thunder last spring. He had 62 1/3 innings with 48 strikeouts and five complete games.
