Three Ahwatukee Foothills track athletes saw individual age group wins and swept the top three spots in the 1,500-meter run at the 2013 USATF Masters State Championship at Mesa Community College recently.

The Foothills trio — David Allison, Bernie McDonnell and Clint Santoro — posted some of this year’s fastest times and making history as they put together one of the fastest Masters 1,500-meter fields ever run in Arizona.

Allison, coach of Marathon Coaching Consultants and the local Phoenix Flyers Youth Track Club, won overall, eking out a victory by mere strides over McDonnell. His exciting final lap surge from the back of the pack gave him enough space to outrun the entire field and earn the top podium spot in the Men’s 40-44 Division with a time of 4 minutes and 28.61, which puts him sixth in the country in his age group.

McDonnell, an assistant at Desert Vista, broke the Men’s 50-54 1,500-meter Arizona state record with a time of 4:29.46, leaving him ranked No. 2 in the U.S. in his age group.

Santoro, coach of the women’s running group Distance Mamas Ahwatukee, finished third in 4:31.81 to maintains his top U.S. ranking in the Men’s 35-39 division in the event.
