Area tennis players were unable to advance deep into the singles or doubles state tournament this season.

Mae Maiefski and Anastasia Pushkarenko of Mountain Pointe’s girls tennis were eliminated on Saturday in the third round by the fourth-seeded doubles team of Nicole Whinery and Maeve McGeorge of Salpointe Catholic.

Other area competitors who were eliminated in the third round were Desert Vista’s Melissa Khan in singles and Yolena Carlon and Tori Kammerzell of Desert Vista in doubles.

Kahn, the eighth seed, was knocked out by Desert Mountain’s Kristie Lee.

Carlon and Kammerzell couldn’t get past the Xavier tandem of Margaret Cohen and Scarlet Rush, the top-seeded combo.

The rest of the area players were either lost in the first or second round.

The Desert Vista girls team made the state team tournament as the 14th seed and play its first-round match at Hamilton on Wednesday at 3 p.m. To see the entire bracket, go to: http://www.aia365.com/brackets/tennis-girls/d1.
