Mountain Pointe outfielder Jake Alexander helped Team Arizona to the Jr. Sunbelt Classic title in Oklahoma as the team went 9-1, including a 5-2 win over Colorado in the title game.

Five Arizona players were named to the all-tournament team as Catalina Foothills’s Luis Gonzalez was named top player, Sunnyslope’s Calvin Leburn was named top pitcher, while the Greenway duo of Tyler Frost and Payton Squier and Cienega’s Luis Gonzalez were named to the all-tournament team.

It is the second time Arizona won the tournament title, matching the 2008 squad.

Benavidez family to host boxing, cancer event

The Breast Cancer Society announced recently that boxers Jose Benavidez Jr. and David Benavidez, as well as their father and trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. will all be honored guests at the Boxing For Breast Cancer.

The event will be June 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Superstition Springs Golf Course, 6542 E. Baseline Road in Mesa.

Benavidez Jr. turned pro at 17, after being the youngest ever to win the National Golden Gloves at the age of 16 and holds a record of 17-0 with 13 knockouts. David Benavidez has his debut fight as a professional boxer scheduled for July in Mexico. Benavidez Sr. has dedicated his life to his sons and training them to be champions.

Autographed memorabilia will be given to a breast cancer survivor, symbolizing “the fight she has inside.”

Benavidez Sr. will be the motivational speaker, sharing the struggle, triumph and victory of his family. Survivors and attendees will have an opportunity to be photographed with the Benavidez family as all three will be signing autographs and taking photos.

This is a free event and open to the public, complimentary lunch to be served.
