The state basketball tournament beings this week for area girls and boys teams.

All of the Division I area teams were among the pairings when it was released on Sunday.

The question now is how long will each team stick around.

The Mountain Pointe girls have the best shot as the only one to receive a first-round bye.

The Pride earned a bye as the No. 7 ranked team in Division I. On Friday they will host the winner of the No. 23 Cienega-No. 10 Tolleson contest.

Mountain Pointe’s half-bracket includes No. 2 Highland, a team the Pride beat early in the year, and No. 3 Pinnacle, which has defeated Mountain Pointe twice this year.

No. 16 Desert Vista opens at home on Wednesday against No. 17 Phoenix with the winner advancing to play No. 1 St. Mary’s.

The Mountain Pointe boys opens at home on Thursday against No. 17 Red Mountain. The winner advances to face No. 1 Corona del Sol on Saturday.

No. 22 Desert Vista opens at No. 11 Gilbert on Thursday with the winner traveling to No. 6 Chaparral on Saturday.

The Valley Christian girls, which has five athletes from Ahwatukee, earned a bye in the Division III tournament as the No. 7 seed.
