Aaron Windler’s return to boys basketball was a one-year stay with Mountain Pointe.

Windler spoke to his varsity players Monday morning and officially resigned later that afternoon.

It is tough to tell if last year’s final four will be among those to apply as two of the three known candidates took jobs with other programs as Perry’s Joe Babinski and Westwood’s Hosea Graham are coming off the first year at their respective schools. One of the other finalists was Fountain Hill’s Matt Johnson, who has been in place for a few years.

The Pride finished last season with a 14-13 record but seemed to turn the corner down the stretch as they beat Gilbert, lost to top-seeded Mesa by two points in the sectionals, knocked off Red Mountain in the first round of state, and lost a heart-breaking 66-65 triple overtime thriller to top-seeded and eventual state champion Corona del Sol in the second round of the Division I state tournament.

Windler took the job after taking a year off when he resigned at Chaparral before the 2010-11 season.

The roster had eight sophomores and juniors on the team, led by 6-foot-6 Chris Davis and 6-3 guard Emmanuel Butler. Junior Jalen Brown is also a talent but his status is unknown as his future is in football and he only came out for the team this year a month into it when the Pride was decimated by injuries and academic issues.
