The eight-team sectional basketball tournaments kicked off on Tuesday night for the girls and the boys start on Wednesday. Semifinalists earn automatic bids into the state tournament.

The Mountain Pointe girls grabbed the second seed in Division I, Section III, and face No. 7 Boulder Creek on Tuesday at Desert Mountain at 7:30 p.m. The Desert Vista girls are the third seed and take on No. 6 Marcos de Niza at 5:45 p.m. at Desert Mountain. If they both win then they face each other in Thursday’s semifinals at Chaparral at 5:45 p.m. The finals are at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday.

The Mountain Pointe boys secured the final spot in Division I, Section III, with a regular season finale win over Gilbert.

The Pride take on top-seeded Mesa at Chaparral at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday with the semifinals on Friday and finals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The games count in power rankings that determine the 24-team state tournament, which gets under way next week.
