Two local players have thrown important innings this season for Grand Canyon University as the Lopes qualified for the NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C., after winning the West Regional.

Desert Vista graduate Trent Wilson entered the weekend with 16 appearances, including 11 starts, with 3-3 record and a 4.42 ERA. In 55 innings, the junior struck out 32 and walked 27. He started the first game of the West Regional and went five strong innings but didn’t factor in the decision against Chico State.

Mountain Pointe graduate Kyle Detwiler had 13 appearances with two starts to compile a 1-2 record with a 6.16 ERA. In 19 innings, the left-handed freshman struck out 11 and walked 10.
