Youth baseball squad wins tourney

Club SPAWN, a 13U club baseball team based out of Ahwatukee and managed by Todd McFarlane, won the 13U AAA title in the 2013 USSSA Spring Championships Super NIT at Victory Lane Sports Park in Glendale last weekend.

It went 6-1 and outscored its opponents 72-22.

The Arizona team, now 57-16-3, beat T2 Black, a Corona, Calif.,-based squad, 10-7 in the semifinals to avenge its only loss in pool play.

SPAWN defeated Orange Crush from Orange County, Calif., 10-1 in the championship game.

The team is now ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in points in the 13U AAA division with 1310 (tied with T2 Black).

It was one of more than 250 teams that competed in the tournament, but the only team from Arizona to win a championship.

This includes teams in the 7U to 14U age groups in AA, AAA, and Major divisions.

SPAWN dedicated its win to Rikki, the McFarlane’s terminally ill dog (16 years old). Rikki posed with the team following the win at home plate.
