Desert Vista wrestling coach David Gonzalez wanted to try something new this winter break.

So the team changed things up and went to the North Torrance Tournament of Champions.

After winning the 63-team event, the Thunder just might want to think about going back next season.

If the opposition will let them.

Desert Vista had six placers, including three champions, to pass Santa Fe in the champion round. Santa Fe led by 10.5 points before the Thunder's three finalists stepped on the mat.

Ace Martinez (160), Sam Schoepf (171) and Alex Bambic (215) all pinned in the championship round to win going away 191-183.5.

Martinez was named the upper weight outstanding wrestler after registering five pins.

The other placers for the Desert Vista were Robbie Mathers (125, 4th), Tyler Struck (119, 7th) and Cooper Gardner (130, 7th).
